Why sod rather than seed?
- Sod provides an immediate visual impact on your site. Seeding can take up to 2 years to become as full as sod when it arrives at your site.
- Sod provides useability in less than 2 weeks. Seedings are not really usable for 2 years.
- Sod can withstand storms much better than a seeding, which could wash away and need reseeding.
- The thick mat of sod will fend off weeds on the open soil, compared to several weed killing applications that will be needed with seed.
- Sod needs to stay wet to establish roots for the first 2 weeks. Seed will require much more water as it evaporates on black soil and will take several years to have full coverage.
- Sod can be installed any time the ground is not frozen, whereas seedings are best done in the Spring or Fall.
The bottom line on sod vs seed: seeding will have a lower initial cost than sod. But, in the long run the amount of watering, fertilizing, care (risk of failures or washouts), and weed killing applications will be much more expensive than sod. The sod arrives as a finished product on day one and seeding will take at least 2 years to compare. Your new sod yard will be usable in 2 weeks. Call us for a Sod quote today!
